Principles Underpinning Composition Exercise

Lecturer:
Last week, I was late for Mr. Vinod lecturer class session. I missed his talks, his shares, his guidelines and almost all his class instruction for the next practical exercises. When I reached the class, I was constantly followed-up my classmates to seek for guidelines so that my lateness won’t be a barrier for doing the class practical exercises. However, after looking around my classmate’s photography, Mr. Vinod told me most of my pictures did not fulfill the marking criteria. Thus, I have to retake another picture that links to the topic.

Below are the in-class practical exercises:

F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
F5.6     S1/30   ISO400
F5.6     S1/15   ISO400
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400
From the lecturer advice I understood that: the principles underpinning composition should
1. Composed the principle with the element in the picture
2. Underpin the exact principle with the element in the picture.

Specific Instructions for Exercise 4b: Principles underpinning composition
Capture 4 Images adhering to any of the mentioned principles below:
Domination/Emphasis • Isolation • Balance • Repetition• Alignment • Contrast • Rhythm • Symmetry/Asymmetry• Harmony • Perspective • Reflection
Print all 4 images on an A4 as instructed in class.
(Put to use what you have learnt in the Zone system exercises here)

1. Contrast
F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
2. Repetition
F5.6     S1/125 ISO400
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400
F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
3. Balance
F5.6     S1/150 ISO400

4. Isolation
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400

F5.6     S1/150 ISO400

Experience:
Walking from 1 place to another place to get a good shot of picture is definitely like hell! Why? I was wearing a dry t-shirt and I ended up a shirt with strong odor due to excessive sweat. Starting from bending down my legs to squatting my knees and most energetic thing was lying down on a road to capture the societies unconscious behavior. Yeah! Sounds awesome yet all effort paid off.
Observation:
Doing this exercise, definitely not easy! I noticed my surrounding occupied a lot of things but that doesn’t mean I can randomly take a picture to fit in the composition of the subject. For example, I can take a picture of staircase to shows the repetition of each step of floor however I noticed the other factors might effect my photography such as the contrast color since most staircases are build in a less bright area.
Findings:
Each principle compositions are very straightforward and direct and I understand the connotation behind. As Mr. Vinod told me it is easy to fulfill the marking criteria but there is no inspiration or feeling in the picture. Therefore, I learn that art need passion and creativity but also a feeling of sensation.
