Theme-based project: Presentation of a series of 5 images

Lecturer:
Last week, Mr. Vinod taught us Photoshop. He introduced us the basic tools such as dodge tool, burn tool, quick selection tool and so on. We also learn how to adjust our image clarity through adjusting the image color, brightness, and contrast. After that, Mr. Vinod checked our respective exercises and gave his remarks to us.

From the lecturer I understood that: Photoshop
1. Improve the quality of image
2. Clear up the imperfection of image

Instruction: Final Project

Theme-based project: Presentation of a series of 5 images.
Student, you have by now completed various exercises on Exposure and composition. This means that you are now able to:1) Control your exposures after pre determining the desired result ala The Zone System (To be able to anticipate the final result before making the exposure)2) Use The Rule of Thirds or principles underpinning composition to identify and compose potential points of interest within the frame.

3) Understand and achievWith the above done and understood, it is now time to put your1)Control your exposures after pre determining the desired result ala The Zone System (To be able to anticipate the final result before making the exposure)
2) Use The Rule of Thirds or principles underpinning composition to identify and compose potential points of interest within the frame.
3) Understand and achieve consistency
4) Edit at a basic level (next week)
With the above done and understood, it is now time to put your mettle to the test.

Your Task:
Choose a Subject of Interest, i.e.: Architecture, Landscape, Peoples, Person, Still Life, etc. and capture a series of 5 images. You will present the final result in your MS Doc. along with a rationale. You will also update your eportfolio with the said.

To elaborate further:
If the subject is Architecture and the topic is KLCC, you will shoot a series of 5 pictures on that topic only. This work will then be edited in Adobe Photoshop and presented to the class. Of course to achieve a series of 5 pictures you will have to visit the topic several times before achieving pictures of good quality (Exposure, composition, consistency and editing). It is through this process that you will learn to plan your shots before actually photographing them.

Feedback
Mr. Vinod looks through each of our individual work and strongly encourages me to use photoshop to edit my pictures.

Reflection

Experience:
My first shot at Jalan Alor Street Food Night Market was during the dim evening. As I understand, insufficient of light will produce a poor quality of image. So, I decided to walk down the town at noon as early as 4pm!

Observation:
Well, there are always dozens of things happening at Jalan Alor. I observed people are selling “Cucuk”, cutting vegies, cooking and so on. Because of these small tiny actions that catch my attention a lot to depict my photography.

Findings:
Photography is always challenging and interesting! With the aid of Photoshop, I am able to overcome my imperfect images.

Theme-based project: Presentation of a series of 5 images

Lecturer:
No lecturer was conducted however Mr. Vinod looks up each of our Microsoft Word exercises so that we arrange and edit in the correct way.  Mr. Vinod also updated his instruction in our Facebook group page. Below is his instruction:

For those of you who were absent yesterday and could not discuss and "show" me your sample topic pics please send them to me over FB msg over the weekend. You must begin the real work over the next week if you intend to do well, but, not without first selecting an appropriate, suitable topic for yourself.

Ps/ next week is the last week of submission for all previous exercises (1-4).

From the lecturer advice/instruction I understood that:
1. Begin the real work over the next week
2. Select an appropriate, suitable topic

Topic: Jalan Alor Street Food Night Market

I decided to take this picture which is knowns as Dragon Bread because it catches a lot of people attention when the smoke expands around the environment. Also, I find it quite challenging where I have to wait for the right moment to capture thus picture.

Feedback

Mr. Vinod looks through each of our individual work and strongly encourage me to proceed the topic with Jalan Alor Food Street Night Market.
Reflection
Experience:
It is absolutely not an easy exercise because I feel hard in capture every tiny aspect/details of people doing things. When I try to take picture I have to choose a proper spot because very least light is available at night and that makes me to adjust a higher ISO but thank GOD IT was not raining!

Observation:
Jalan Alor is always a busy and hectic night market that famous for street food. I observe Jalan Alor is crowded that makes me unable to have small tiny spot to take picture. It was so crowded and I was been pushed left to right.

Findings:
I learn that taking picture is never an easy and right thing to do because I am at risk of taking picture without sufficient of light enter to camera. I learn that next time I should take picture of Jalan Alor at evening timing while the sun is still there.

Consistency Exercise

Lecturer:
The first thing Mr. Vinod emphasized was our eportfolio. He taught us how to arrange our eportfolio and strongly advised us to always up-to-date our exercises. Then, Mr. Vinod brief us the final project. He told us the final project is a theme based project, which means, we have to select a proper topic that we are interested and present it to Mr. Vinod. In class, Mr. Vinod shows us a lot of examples by providing us extensive information and guidelines. In one of the example, he mentioned a photographer took picture of skies with different background at night. At here, he enlightens us the core consistent subject is the sky even though the photographer took a different view of scenery.

Below are my 3 topics:
Topic 1 Toys Car

Topic 2: Verities of Culture People

Topic 3: Food
Feedback
Mr. Vinod told me my first topic of toys car is too bored where he told me only isolation and dominance composition are applied in the pictures.

 Reflection
 Experience:
After hearing Mr. Vinod feedback, I feel I am absolutely not ready in doing this exercise because first, I do not make enough of research, second, I do not come out an appropriate topic, and third, due to time consuming, I am not up-to-date in Mr. Vinod exercise.

Observation:
Due to time consuming, I notice I have to push myself in doing this exercise since I have left a few of exercises. As I notice, a few of my classmates had able to come out a topic for the next following class, I guess is time for me to catch up.

Findings:
I learn that I need to come out an appropriate topic for the next class so that Mr. Vinod can see and understand am I doing the exercise in the right path.

Principles Underpinning Composition Exercise: Week 5

02.03.2017 (Week 5)
Christina Hiew (300 416 675)
Principles Underpinning Composition Exercise

Lecturer:
Last week, I was late for Mr. Vinod lecturer class session. I missed his talks, his shares, his guidelines and almost all his class instruction for the next practical exercises. When I reached the class, I was constantly followed-up my classmates to seek for guidelines so that my lateness won’t be a barrier for doing the class practical exercises. However, after looking around my classmate’s photography, Mr. Vinod told me most of my pictures did not fulfill the marking criteria. Thus, I have to retake another picture that links to the topic.

Below are the in-class practical exercises:

F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
F5.6     S1/30   ISO400
F5.6     S1/15   ISO400
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400
From the lecturer advice I understood that: the principles underpinning composition should
1. Composed the principle with the element in the picture
2. Underpin the exact principle with the element in the picture.

Specific Instructions for Exercise 4b: Principles underpinning composition
Capture 4 Images adhering to any of the mentioned principles below:
Domination/Emphasis • Isolation • Balance • Repetition• Alignment • Contrast • Rhythm • Symmetry/Asymmetry• Harmony • Perspective • Reflection
Print all 4 images on an A4 as instructed in class.
(Put to use what you have learnt in the Zone system exercises here)

1. Contrast
F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
2. Repetition
F5.6     S1/125 ISO400
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400
F5.6     S1/60   ISO400
3. Balance
F5.6     S1/150 ISO400

4. Isolation
F5.6     S1/80   ISO400

F5.6     S1/150 ISO400

5. Dominance
F5.6     S1/150 ISO1600

Feedback
Reflection
Experience:
Walking from 1 place to another place to get a good shot of picture is definitely like hell! Why? I was wearing a dry t-shirt and I ended up a shirt with strong odor due to excessive sweat. Starting from bending down my legs to squatting my knees and most energetic thing was lying down on a road to capture the societies unconscious behavior. Yeah! Sounds awesome yet all effort paid off.
Observation:
Doing this exercise, definitely not easy! I noticed my surrounding occupied a lot of things but that doesn’t mean I can randomly take a picture to fit in the composition of the subject. For example, I can take a picture of staircase to shows the repetition of each step of floor however I noticed the other factors might effect my photography such as the contrast color since most staircases are build in a less bright area.
Findings:
Each principle compositions are very straightforward and direct and I understand the connotation behind. As Mr. Vinod told me it is easy to fulfill the marking criteria but there is no inspiration or feeling in the picture. Therefore, I learn that art need passion and creativity but also a feeling of sensation.
